Carbon sheet improvisations
Metamorphosis/Athens
Drawings continuing the improvisational practice of Metamorphosis/Athens. The form serving as the building unit for the drawings comes from a manhole cover in Athens, and is "collected" during a process of documentation. A new creative method for Metamorphosis is introduced, one largely dictated by the materials used. The drawings, created with the application of carbon sheet on paper, are made in "blind". The markings made on the paper are not visible during the creative process, and are only revealed with the conclusion of each improvisation and the "unveiling" of the work. Rhythm and memory (of the previous markings' location) play major part in the process as well as the element of surprise.
The carbon sheets used come from a big carbon paper roll discarded by a clothes remodeling shop in the center of Athens. The paper is part of the salvaged packaging for large sheets of archival cartons used in a paper conservation laboratory in Athens.
Part of the series was featured in the group exhibition Artists' Cards vol. II in Elika Gallery, December 2014.
Carbon sheet Improvisations are part of the ongoing project Metamorphosis/Athens and the broader work Metamorphosis in dialogue with diverse urban environments.
