IMPROVISATIONS (2014)
Drawing Metamorphosis/Athens Work exploring a visual vocabulary that derives from the city's built environment. Abstract forms and patterns latent in urban elements of the city's "invisible" layer such as pavement tiles, manhole covers, benches, etc. are documented in situ, taken out of their initial context and given a new - poetic - function as building blocks of a self-contained visual structure. Each Improvisation is executed in powdered pigment on paper with the repetitive application of a single form that serves as the unit/building block for the composition. Archival notes: The works are executed with powdered pigment in black and turquoise on Saunders Waterford Coldpress 100% cotton paper and handmade 100% cotton paper. Improvisations are part of Metamorphosis/Athens and the broader project Metamorphosis |

Source Material/Traces
The documentation of urban elements is conducted through the method of frottage, a non-intermediated way of capturing the element's texture on paper. Each sample is a Trace corresponding to a series of drawings, that are built with the form that characterizes it.
